How To Put Cutlery In A Dishwasher?

Having the passion to cook and eat is something that cannot exist without utensils, dishware, and cutlery. Taking care of every utensil in your kitchen is important because we use them to cook and eat that tasty food. When we buy a new set of dishes or cutlery because we loved it from the first sight, we definitely want it to last as long as possible.

This is only possible if we take into account some basic tips to clean and store the utensils we use in the kitchen. This time we will talk specifically about cutlery and the use of the dishwasher.

If you have a dishwasher, you probably say that it is one essential appliance of your kitchen. It saves us a lot of time and effort. What could be better than that?

However, you need to be careful. If you do not place your cutlery properly in the dishwasher, at the end of the cycle it could be uncleaned. It also can damage other utensils inside the dishwasher.

That is why here we are going to talk a little bit about how to set a dishwasher, and more importantly, how to put the cutlery correctly in the dishwasher. Continue reading and learn more about this topic:

How To Use A Dishwasher

Let’s start by saying that every dishwasher is different. Each manufacturer tries to make its best when it comes to organizing and cleaning dishes, cutlery, and cooking utensils.

However, traditional dishwashers have two racks, the top rack is used for more delicate utensils, and the bottom rack is used for bigger objects because it has more space. For the cutlery, sometimes they come with a third rack to place them horizontally, and others have a basket to place them vertically.

Below we will detail what kind of utensils you should put in each rack:

Top Rack

As we mentioned before, the top rack is used to place delicate items. This includes soup bowls, coffee cups, glass cups, wine glasses, and utensils that are too large to fit in the basket. You need to be careful when placing these items on the rack.

The cups and glasses should be facedown. In this way, you prevent water collecting inside of them. The same happens with your bowls. They should go between the tines, separate from each other.

Try to avoid putting your glassware over the tines. It is better to place them between them because they usually tend to move during the wash cycle. This movement can make cracks and chips in your glassware.

Bottom Rack

This rack is usually bigger than the top rack. It is because it is intended to hold bigger items such as pans, dishes, and pots. We recommend you do not load your plates in the same direction. All of them should face the center of the rack.

Third Rack

Some dishwashers come with a third rack, which is directly above the top rack. It is used to place horizontally silverware and other large utensils.

The Basket

Most of the dishwashers come with a silverware basket. Some of them have divisions or cell covers to separate the cutlery. That is a good option to separate each utensil from the other.

However, other baskets do not have more than three or four divisions. In that case, you could use each division for a different type of utensil.

Below, we will mention more tips about putting cutlery in a dishwasher.

How To Put Cutlery In A Dishwasher

Knowing how to correctly place the cutlery in your dishwasher will make things easier for you. We recommend that you read the dishwasher manual or the manufactures’ website to check for any information about the topic. However, we are going to provide you some tips that will help you to avoid making common mistakes when putting cutlery in the dishwasher:

Something clear about this is that knives should go with the blades down and handles up. It will prevent injuries the moment you take out the utensils because you will take them from the handles.

Although you can find different opinions about how to put the forks, let’s say that it is up to you. Some manufactures say that it is better to put their face down for safety and spoons face up to get a better result.

If your dishwasher has a basket with slots, we encourage you to use it because in that way they will not mix. In that case, you will probably need to place the forks with the handles down, because they would not fit in another way.

On the other hand, if your basket or utensil rack does not have slots, then you are free to place forks and spoons up or down. The main idea is to avoid that utensils (especially spoons) stick together. If this happens, they are not going to be cleaned.

Another thing that you need to be careful about when using the dishwasher to clean your cutlery is the material. Not all the materials are dishwasher safe. For instance, wood, plastic, and bronze. If you have cutlery made of any of these materials, even if it is just the handle, then it will be better to wash them by hand.

Finally, one utensil that you should not put in the dishwasher is a chef knife. These knives are essential in the kitchen because they help us to cut foods easily and quickly. If you put this type of knife in the dishwasher, it is possible that the blade loses the edge, and therefore its usefulness.

As you can see, there are some considerations to take into account when putting the cutlery from the kitchen in the dishwasher. The main goal will always be to have clean dishes and utensils when the dishwasher finishes the cycle. It will be possible only if we put the objects in their right place. Start organizing your cutlery properly, so they will be ready for the next meal!
