Let's keep continue with a brief explanation of the different materials that silverware can be made of:

Material

Although we are talking about silver cutlery, the question of the right material is not so easy to answer. One thing is certain: the cutlery should already be made of silver or silver-colored coating. But in what proportions? Pure silver is not suitable for cutlery production for reasons described in more detail later.

Different alloys

Jewelry and cutlery made of silver are usually accompanied by three digits that provide information about the silver content. The following mixing ratios are the most common:

Marking - Meaning

  • 999 - Pure silver, only the tiniest impurities
  • 925 - sterling silver
  • 800 - Silver with larger copper content, slightly reddish color.
  • Nickel silver - copper, nickel and zinc - no silver!

Not all alloys are listed in the table above. From the selection, it is easy to see how well different mixing ratios can affect the cutlery.

Pure silver

Silver as such is rather soft. It is therefore not suitable for cutlery production. Thin structures, such as the tines of the fork, but also the serrated edge of the knives, would easily be damaged. Therefore, in order to obtain a harder material, the silver is alloyed, i.e. mixed, with other metals.

Sterling silver

Sterling silver is perhaps the best known silver alloy. It consists of 92.5% pure silver. The remaining portions are mostly copper. Adding copper to silver results in a harder material that can now be used to make cutlery.

800 silver

This alloy has a little more copper and is 80% silver. The larger copper content provides greater strength. The 800 silver is often used for everyday items, including cutlery.

Silver cutlery made of 800 silver are hard and resistant. The copper content also gives it a very delicate reddish shimmer.

Nickel Silver

Nickel silver is not silver. It consists of copper, nickel and zinc. It looks more like silver than stainless steel cutlery sets.

Hallmark

If you ever hold a piece of cutlery in your hands and you are not sure what it is made of, take a look at the hallmark.

A hallmark is a small stamp that is usually found on the back of the piece of cutlery - in a place that is not cosmetically relevant. The hallmark provides information about who made the cutlery and often what it is made of.

On cutlery that is partly made of silver, you will often find a number between 200 and 1000 on the hallmark. From this you can read the percentage of silver: In principle, this number indicates the percentage. A 500 would mean that the piece is half silver.

Workmanship

The manufacture of quality cutlery is a fine art. The numerous shapes, curvatures and angles - especially in the forks - are not easy to achieve.

But how can you recognize good workmanship?

Here are the most important aspects at a glance:

  • Material thickness should not be less than 2mm
  • Knife blade should not be easy to bend
  • Forks should not have sharp edges
  • Weight should be well balanced
  • The serrated edge of the table knife must be impeccable and uniform

On this basis, you can distinguish good from bad cutlery. The tines of the fork in particular are an excellent indication of quality. If they are rounded and have no hard edges, then you probably have a passable silver cutlery in your hands.

Design

While we can hardly give you tips on which design to find beautiful, a few basic things in terms of appearance are important.

Even if the silverware is intended rather for particularly festive occasions, too extensive decorations are rather counterproductive. First, they may not fit the decor of some festivities.

Secondly, cutlery with decorations are more elaborate to some. This is especially true for silver cutlery. But with some silver cutlery sets, tarnishing is sometimes intentional:

Hammered silver cutlery

Cutlery pieces that have been hammered are very special. They have a pattern of small dimples that remotely resemble the dents in a golf ball. Achieving this shape is not easy, which is why these cutlery pieces usually cost a bit more and are correspondingly more valuable.

Hammered, as well as elaborately decorated silver cutlery take advantage of the fact that the silver tarnishes; in the places where the silver tarnishes, it turns dark.

The dark discoloration give the design of the cutlery a new depth and more contrast.

Cleaning and care of silverware

Silverware does not belong in the dishwasher! Silverware is usually alloyed with some copper and copper can tarnish and turn brownish. Therefore:

Silverware is best cleaned by hand. Yes, this will make you a little more work, but in the end you will hold shiny silver in your hands.

In addition, these tips can be helpful when rinsing the silver:

  • Rinse under lukewarm water
  • Use detergent sparingly
  • Dry cutlery directly after rinsing.

To prevent discoloration caused by food residues, it is advisable to rinse the silverware quickly after use.

Cleaning tarnished silver

Tarnished silver has a dark discoloration, but this can be rubbed off with a polishing cloth.

If you encounter a particularly badly tarnished piece, polishing the silverware will take much longer. For a set of silverware for six people, this task can easily take half an afternoon.

But there are special polishing pastes for cutlery that make your work easier.

It should be said that these pastes make cleaning easier, but can do little or nothing to protect the silver from tarnishing again. Polishing pastes that come with a protection against tarnishing should be approached with caution.

Foods that tarnish silver

Sulfur causes silver to tarnish more quickly. Since sulfur is also present in some foods, you should refrain from eating them with silverware. For example, these foods contain sulfur:

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Fish
  • Crabs
  • Peanuts
  • Broccoli
  • Parsley

Properly store silverware

If you plan on not using silverware for an extended period of time, we recommend storing silverware properly.

One of the easiest tricks to store silver so that it doesn't tarnish as quickly:

Wrap silver flatware in napkins to protect it from tarnishing.

This will shield the silver from the surrounding air, delay oxidation, and keep your silver shining longer.
